The forces that drive me to create regardless of the medium are formal as well as expressive concerns. What results from the intertwining of these concerns with the act of painting begins the passage of that image.

There is a mystery in this process as I begin to work. In the creative process, a conversation arises between the image and the artist. For me it is as if I were in a dark cave, feeling my way, bumping into walls, tumbling into the unknown. It is a process of retracing my steps in this creative dance so that slowly an understanding of how to maneuver emerges.

This retracing begins to build a chronicle of the movement back and forth within the painting. Time is enveloped in the layers bringing a contextual richness to the piece. At some point, some brushstroke of color or movement in the work tells me the conversation has run its course.
